Ukraine Separatist Leader Declares That The Ceasefire Is Over

Separatist 'Prime Minister': The Ceasefire In Ukraine Is Over -- Business Insider

The self-declared "prime minister" of the breakaway Donetsk People's Republic (DNR) has declared on Twitter that the month-old ceasefire between Ukraine and the separatist republic has ended.

Granted, this was the sort of cease-fire during which heavy combat was frequent, including fighting that destroyed much of the Donetsk airport. But on Monday, DNR leader Aleksandr Zakharchenko admitted what has been obvious for some time, and tweeted the following after a period of particularly heavy fighting in Donetsk:

Another neat trick by Putin. Get the West to loan the money to Kiev to give to Russia so they (the Ukrainians) have gas and guarantee delivery of gas to the EU that they will pay for also. In this sense the sanctions are working brilliantly. I do not understand why Kiev is trying to hold on to that airport. Maybe someone could fill me in as to why they seem to put so much value in it.

O/T: WNU, when you first came to the West what did you find to be your biggest misconception you had of the West? I'm thinking this side of the Atlantic, but if it serves the purpose as well, then the other side.

Any actual ceasefire was predicated on the withdrawal of the Ukraine Army and Punative Battalions withdrawal from the Cauldrons, back beyond shelling range of Donetsk and Lugansk.

That never happened.

Here is Givi, who you might recognize, talking about how the Ukraine Army is using the remaining forces at the airport as artillary spotters, in the continued shelling of Donetsk.

I suspect today's actions and Twitter is an attempt to get Russia to pressure the Ukraine Military to adhere to the withdrawal requirements of the ceasefire.

I concur Jay. The constant artillery bombardment of Donetsk is only making everyone "pissed-off". There was an agreement signed by Poroshenko that the Ukraine military would withdraw .... but it never happened, and now I cannot help but suspect that they were never serious to comply in the first place. As for the rebel side .... they have also not withdrawn .... and I suspect that they also never really had a desire to comply to the agreement that they signed. They only did so only to placate Putin.

You are right about the sanctions James. Former President Reagan always warned the Europeans on the dangers of being dependent on the Siberian natural gas pipeline .... but western leaders always pooh-poohed his warnings. Now they are dependent on Russian energy sources .... and they will even break and/or circumvent their own sanctions to make sure that this flow is not interrupted. But the idea of lending money to Ukraine to pay off Russia .... I have seen many stupid things .... but that one takes the cake.

As to what was/is my biggest misconception coming to the West .... now that is one very long list. Off hand I would say that I was astounded on how hard some people work here (i.e. in Canada and in the U.S.). I am a workaholic .... so I fit in perfectly .... Europeans are (generally speaking) .... not. The French are not the only ones who enjoy the month of August off .... most Europeans prefer a more relaxed lifestyle over one that involves working all the time. Russians included. But the American work ethic ... that is something to behold .... and it is disappointing to now see much of that work ethic being replaced with a growing dependency on government and their assistance programs.

Interesting. I remember one of the most common complaints of your countrymen who got out in the bad old days, was the amount of the very thing they came for, freedom. It was disconcerting and somewhat demoralizing to them. On a quick note of your occupation in high school as chief dealer in rock and roll, I bet you never effectively translated this song:
