Russian President Putin Discusses Ukraine In Today's News Conference

Putin Says He Is Seeking Resolution of Conflict in Ukraine -- Bloomberg

Russian President Vladimir Putin signaled no change in his approach to the conflict in Ukraine while saying that he is seeking a negotiated resolution to the crisis.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko is “of course” attempting to restore peace and Russia is ready to be an intermediary in talks with separatist rebels, Putin said at his annual media conference in Moscow today.

Poroshenko “wants to resolve the situation but he is not alone,” and others in Ukraine are more militaristic, Putin said. The country needs dialogue to ensure a single political space is maintained in Ukraine.

Why has Putin changed his rhetoric regarding the crisis? Is it just to calm the west or is he seriously considering changing his policy regarding the war in Eastern Ukraine?

Also do you think Donetsk Peoples Republic and Luhansk Peoples Republic is going to be independent or will they back off the wish of independence? Since some says that Moscow doesn't want the republics to become independent and others say that they are determined at reaching independence.

Also do you think there is a possibility of a Kharkov Peoples Republic?

Putin has not changed his rhetoric. He made it very clear that he is not going to change his position on Ukraine. Crimea is the exception .... but Putin has always said that he wanted a unified Ukraine, but a recognition of the rights of the east and the need for a new system/constitution to respect their rights. Even many of the rebel leaders in the east still want to stay in Ukraine .... but on the condition that they have special rights and powers. The problem has always been Kiev, and a refusal to make a deal along these lines.

If Kiev sticks to this position .... I can see the day when these regions will become independent. But if Kiev is willing to compromise .... there is a good chance that to end the war the rebel leaders will agree to stay in Ukraine, but with these expanded powers.

A Kharkiv Republic .... I doubt it. But more powers to this part of the region .... yes.
