Reuters: Ukraine says Russian sanctions must stay, rejects talk of Trump deal

Ukraine's president said on Tuesday world powers should keep sanctions on Russia, rejecting U.S. President Donald Trump's proposal to consider reducing the penalties if Moscow proved a useful ally.

Petro Poroshenko told reporters that sanctions remained the only way to keep Russia at the negotiating table over the crisis in eastern Ukraine, that Western powers say has been fueled by Moscow.

The United States, the European Union and others imposed sanctions on Russia in 2014 over its annexation of the Crimea peninsula from Ukraine and its support for pro-Russia separatists in Ukraine's east.

Arguably the stupidest move ever made by a major in the history of civilization was when the United States stupidly inserted itself in the Ukraine situation. Actually the only way to get Russia to the negotiating table is going to be to lift sanctions.

Had president Obama or any of his team members asked me what would happen if they imposed sanctions on Russia. I would have told them "this is a foolish idea Mr. President. All you are going to accomplish is reinforce the idea in Russia that America is a 'foreign devil' intent on harming them, you will drive the Russian people closer to Mr. Putin thus strengthening his rule, you will ignite a new Cold War, and on top of this sanctions against Russia are not going to be sustainable in the long run and once sanctions collapse you will end up with a stronger Putin, stronger Russia, a New Cold War, and a weakened US position in the world. Essentially Mr. President nothing good can come from such a policy while much bad can will come from it."

Alas, I wasn't asked nor would I have been listened to. Everything I predicted at the time and would have warned POTUS about is coming to pass. It is Mr. Trump's job to represent the interests of the United States and it's citizens. It is NOT the job of POTUS to represent the interests of Mr. Poroshenko or the Ukrainian leadership If there is a conflict, DJT needs to stand his ground. As a pragmatic business person, Mr. Trump will likely understanding the sanctions against Russia are unraveling and cannot be maintained. As such, it makes no sense to push for a policy to try and make sanctions "stay" when they can't be maintained anyway.
