Washington Post: Trump accepts Macron’s invitation to visit France for Bastille Day on July 14

President Trump has accepted French President Emmanuel Macron's invitation to visit and plans to travel to France to celebrate Bastille Day on July 14 at an event that will also commemorate the 100th anniversary of the U.S. entry into World War I to fight alongside France and other allies.

“President Trump looks forward to reaffirming America’s strong ties of friendship with France, to celebrating this important day with the French people, and to commemorating the 100th anniversary of America’s entry into World War I,” White House press secretary Sean Spicer said in a statement Wednesday. “The two leaders will further build on the strong counter-terrorism cooperation and economic partnership between the two countries, and they will discuss many other issues of mutual concern.”

WNU Editor: This public invitation from French President Macron .... and President Trump's acceptance of it .... is smart on many levels. It plays to President Macron's efforts to present himself as someone who wants to be active on the international scene, and it helps President Trump with his European "image problem". It will also be the 100th anniversary of U.S. forces entering France to fight the First World War .... an event that the U.S. President should be present for.

Update: The United Kingdom feels left out .... Protests against Trump are 'repelling' the President and damaging the special relationship Tory MP blasts after White House reveals he is heading to FRANCE before Britain (Daily Mail).

I put the comment "image problem" in brackets. For me .... his visit will not have an impact but "good" press.

A friend recently told me that the French Revolution brought "Freedom" to France...
I countered: "No it didn't. It brought the French Terror and Napoleon. Napoleon's War with England and Russia is what brought 'Freedom' to France."

Matt ...right! a number of writers in England favored the American Revolution but were fully opposed to the French Revolution. The only redeeming thing from that revolution is Les Misérables

FYI. Les Miserables is not about the French revolution it's about a later uprising that took place 43 years later.

I thought the same thing until I researched when the last movie came out.

Fred,

Do we want a good image? Certainly.

But we do not want to abase ourselves to get one.

If someone wrongly criticizes you, you do not grovel to get into their good graces.

I would have thought an old codger such as yourself would have learned this long ago.

Yes, some segments of European society are certainly guilty.
